Many believe that Kung Lao had died in injuries suffered during the final fight against Shao Khan. In fact he had merely turned to a new life without violence in reverence to his ancestral beliefs. As news of Shinnok's threat reaches Kung Lao together with the apparent return of Goro, Kung Lao returns once more to challenge his ancestor's killer.

ENDING
Goro is looking out a window and Kitana enters with two guards.  She explains that she has come to offer the Shokan a treaty for truce.  She says the Centaurs have agreed and she now needs his agreement.  Goro says that he will sign since war has gone on too long, and he'll agree as long as the Centaurs do.  Kitana puts her hand on Goro, and says that this is a good victory.  Kung Lao, who is on a ledge near the ceiling throws his hat at Goro, which slices his chest.  Kitana yells at Kung Lao because she was just about to reach peace, and he's in a mood for fighting.  Kung Lao comes to the floor, and talks about how becoming allies with an enemy was wrong.  Goro asked if he was trying to assassinate him.  Kung Lao says it was revenge for killing his ancestor in Mortal Kombat many years ago.  Goro wants to know if he wants to fight, but Kung Lao says he just wants to settle things.  Goro says the original Kung Lao was a brave and noble fighter, and that he should be proud.  Goro says that if Kung Lao had won, maybe his own son would be looking for revenge.  Then, they shake hands.
